 A transcript of an actual online tutorial conducted by Pat Chalfant, for one of her students, on December 12, 2005 -NOTE: The Harry Edwards' textbook mentioned in this tutorial is, "A Guide to the Development of Mediumship." This tutorial was done through Yahoo Messenger. Alison is a member of Pat's "live" class, and is doing online tutorials in addition to "live or in-person" class work, so the "class" referred to in the transcript below is the "in-person" class. "How to Communicate with Spirits" is a book by Elizabeth Owens that can be bought, as can Harry Edwards' book, on the NSAC Bookstore Site.
Pat Chalfant: Alison, I thought I'd like to chat about guides, since that is what we have been working on in class. I was really impressed the last class we had that everyone came up with identification for a guide. I wanted to tell you that in the meantime I got a book from the NSAC Bookstore (Spiritualist) called "How to Communicate with Spirits." I wanted to know more than I had been taught in my own Spiritualist classes about the different types of guides traditionally encountered. I've mentioned the Chemist and the Doctor, and had I had heard of the Joy Guides, but I now know they have more. I've only been asked to participate in trying to identify the ones I've just mentioned. So now, I have more knowledge and I recommend the book because the author, Elizabeth Owens, has collected the experience of many mediums who live and work on the Casadaga, Florida campgrounds.
Alison: oh, that sounds cool! I've been to Casadaga, but that was way before I knew much about anything.
Pat Chalfant: You went to Casadaga Spiritualist camp--really?
Alison: i lived in Florida my senior year of high school so i was always very intrigued by it. Yes they have a visitor's center and psychic readings etc.
Pat Chalfant: One of the mediums who work there is Reverend Jean Kerr Lerch who investigated reincarnation, along with Bernard Baker, for the National Spiritualist Association of Churches and recommended that it should at least be taught by that group. Reverend Bernard Baker later founded CARE--the group I got my mediumship certification from.
Alison: neat.
Pat Chalfant: One thing that is now uncertain for me, after reading her book, is the whole question of identifying the medium's main guide, the chemist/doorkeeper. The author, Elizabeth Owens, talks in one place about it the way Harry Edwards and others speak about it and in another place, she says that these days, since there is so little physical mediumship being done, the doorkeeper may not be a chemist. The author is Elizabeth Owens, who, by the way, draws pictures of her client's guides when she is reading for them.
Alison: very interesting...
Pat Chalfant: She also says that the doorkeeper is the same as the guide who is with each of us from the beginning of our lives. I don't know now how the whole chemist thing fits into her belief system about the doorkeeper, however.
Alison: that's totally bizarre, looking back, that i had no idea that Casadaga was a "spiritualist" camp--looks like Casadaga has a website as well.
Pat Chalfant: I want to quote something from the book that I thought might support your experience with what you got when asking for identification for a guide who serves as your doorkeeper (page 21): "Colors are usually the first experience a beginning student will encounter, followed by symbols, before they experience the image of a spirit. The spirit may appear hazy in form, in full figure, or perhaps only the face or hands will be seen."
Alison: oh, interesting...well that's good to know - re: colors.
Pat Chalfant: My experience with people in classes I've either attended or taught is a little different from what she says, because I have seen people see lights, not necessarily colored ones in the beginning, then colors would come and symbols, then spirits. But didn't you skip the lights? Or did you? And Karen seems to have leaped right into a face, I think it's for sure because it came to her that way twice, although the first time, I think, it was only part of a face, but recognizable as the same one when it came again .
Alison: yes, in the class where we meditated on the same thing twice - confirmation of our spirit guide - Karen first got a face, lower portion, then a fuller figure of this person. My first experience was lights but it has been the same color consistently. I had one time where I got faces shown to me, that sort of blended one after the other into another face - however, i do feel that if i get the impression of a face, it is a bearded man, which i've mentioned reminds me of what Jesus was always represented as in paintings, which I find kind of funny
Pat Chalfant: I have been really trying to work even with those students who are getting messages before they come into my class, as I think I told you, to be sure that they clearly know who it is who is their doorkeeper. I think it may seem childish to them to have to do that--kind of elementary-sounding--but I want to know that they know. And I feel
that if the spirit with them is legitimate and a good influence, they will be willing to show themselves as a face or a light being of certain colors, don't you? That's something that was mentioned in the Laws of Mediumship that we studied in class. Challenge the spirits and if they are sincerely there to be of help, they should be willing to follow directions, if they have nothing they are hiding.
Alison: yes, I agree. I think we still need to follow the laws of mediumship and make sure we are opening up a dialog w/a being of higher intention. it definitely makes me feel safer!
Pat Chalfant: I have had a student who said she had what seems to me to be a surprising idea, which was that she should somehow pay attention to the spirit person she thinks has been guiding her on a kind of continuous basis. My belief about that goes back to the idea that we have to live our lives, create and clear our own karma, and that those on the other side have already lived their lives here and are now living there and should be busy learning things for themselves and not be communicating with their people on earth 24/7. Perhaps she doesn't mean it, but she has several times referred to the fact that she has these people in evidence with her constantly.
Alison: oh i see.. in the sense of if this person appears to her she should drop everything and listen rather than telling them when they may come to her; well, i will say that i was meditating in yoga on Sunday and i got a blip of the color that reminds me of my guide but it went away - not sure what that was about other than maybe a reminder that is the easiest way i have been able to get the same result - meditating.
Pat Chalfant: Yes, it seems that is what she has been doing, then feeling guilty if she didn't do it for a while. It makes me suspicious when I hear that because it would seem that she doesn't have control of the situation, and as Harry Edwards says, those on the other side are all too eager sometimes to take over if we don't control our time with them.
Alison: right!
Pat Chalfant: Anyway, after we had done some at least I'm clearer now on what her orientation is to spirit and better able to help, I think. I can hardly believe the work that Sam has been doing to get himself organized and working in the way that he can make safe progress. When he first came to class about two years ago, he was out of class way more than he was in. I didn't think he would ever be any more serious, maybe, than many other people who only came sporadically--but now he is!
Alison: yes i was just thinking about that and he definitely appears to be making an effort to apply that rule.
Pat Chalfant: I am glad we're talking about guides in this tutorial together because it is something that, as Karen said, when I asked her opinion on my doing a workshop to help people find their guides (hopefully, sometime after the first of 2006), should gather a lot of workshop members if I advertise it well. She said she hears questions being asked about that in almost all groups and chat rooms she goes into.
Alison: yeah it's definitely a nice concept that we have a spirit guide. it was kind of interesting b/c i haven't really talked very much to Brady (my new boyfriend) about my classes etc. and we talked a bit about it yesterday. he didn't really know what our class was all about and it's kind of interesting to try and explain it to someone who's unfamiliar with such things - especially with the overall concept of spiritualist beliefs, teaching, etc. - he really liked the idea of
psychometry and talks a lot about going w/his "gut feeling" - it's still a puzzle to me what the difference is between if this is just what i know or is this a message that is given to me from my guides...i still go back and forth on that topic!
Pat Chalfant: I think Sam is doing phenomenally well about following the Law of Control and the Law of Order and all the Laws that are so essential to obey when getting messages. Going back to your experience in yoga, it's interesting that the color started to come then went away for you in yoga. Sounds like it may have been just for the reason you
mention...to remind you that it happens in meditation. Sounds like a confirmation, don't you think? Or have you had color show up in meditation in yoga before it happened in our class?
Alison: honestly i'm not sure if i've really tapped into getting messages from guides too much. i'm just in my own life, learning to trust my intuition. for a long time i really numbed all of that out and sort of went through life even tho there were things that i felt i knew before i went into them - especially with relationships! No, i don't recall having color come to me in yoga before we started exploring contacting our guides.
Pat Chalfant: Does that help you about thinking it really is intentional? Or do you still just think that it's a random happening?
Alison: the colors?
Pat Chalfant: I know that as you move ahead with actually trying to do messages for people, you will forget all about your doubt. I know, because it happened to me. I know I went through that period, but it so went away when it disappeared, that I can't even remember what it felt like now. What if we try to do a message for each other right now and see if you get anything like you've gotten in class?
Alison: ok, we can do that...as for the colors, i think they come as a result of meditation and the intent of contacting my guide - they've only appeared so far in class when i meditate and we've done those exercises. also, it takes a bit for me to get them, when i'm meditating. i'm not sure what happened in yoga - but it was only for a couple seconds
then disappeared.
Pat Chalfant: I have one other quote from the book that might interest you--she identifies a "teacher" guide who may help when you are in a position of teaching others, but, "…is present during experiences meant to bring growth to an individual. The teacher guide can be of the most assistance when we are experiencing situations that appear to be unfair. If we meditate on the circumstances that brought about the situation we find unjust, we may discover that we are experiencing a karmic balancing. In other words, we are experiencing the same thing we inflicted upon another previously."
Alison: oh that's pretty cool.
Pat Chalfant: I wondered as I read this if you haven't had a teacher guide with you in the past life work you've done, during the energy balancing, where you quickly got a series of past lives.
Alison: yah that same thought came to mind when you sent me that quote.
Pat Chalfant: I decided to go ahead and close my eyes and see what I would get for you. I get a new path for you. I believe it may be a relationship, although at first I thought it was work, but a pink light came with it and a cross and interestingly enough the fact that it was being brought by someone who is dead with the initial "E."
Alison: you've gotten E before w/me, which is very interesting. I wonder if it's my grandmother Ethel.
Pat Chalfant:The"E" was shown twice--as confirmation which is spirit's way of saying yes to what we're discussing, so Ethel it is. Whatever this new path will be, it will actually come in two parts, but one will be a relationship and each will be as easy to have in your life--to accomplish, so to speak-- as a piece of cake. I would think it would be your grandmother, then.
Alison: mmm that sounds lovely.
Pat Chalfant: I also got a man, which meant to me that it is a relationship and a new vocation.
Alison: that's interesting....i have been getting the new vocation lately, from you, and then on saturday sherry said something about that.
Pat Chalfant: So... see what you get for me...
Alison: gee, i hope the new man isn't someone besides brady! i think i'd like to keep him around…k...hmm...well i can try to get a message for you, but i need a focus i think? maybe a question that you're wanting an answer for
Pat Chalfant: Even if you only get lights or colors, that will show that those are your indication that you're getting the start of messages. But you don't have to get anything, or even try, if you are too nervous about trying.
Alison: ok let me sit and meditate a bit --- feel free to keep yourself busy... meditating will commence now
Pat Chalfant: Ok. Back with you in five...
Alison: but think of a question you want an answer to

Alison: aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh i had a very tough time...i went from being bothered by the light in here, to freaking myself out, to having to calm myself down and tell myself i'm safe and protected, to seeing a puff of smoke or maybe a snow drift, to nothing.
Pat Chalfant: I am so sorry. Do you want to try again or just give up? The puff of smoke--was it white or black?
Alison: it was grayish white.
Pat Chalfant: That was "black."
Alison: the messages are archiving
Alison: just a swirl
Alison: oops
Alison: i don't know why i get so scared
Alison: i think that's also why i don't meditate alone
Alison: it's kind of silly
Pat Chalfant: I was trying to connect it to the puffs that come from the Vatican when they're electing a pope--white for yes and black for no. Not sure about grayish white.
Alison: when i'm in class i can totally do it and i feel safe but i get myself scared when i'm alone - which is silly!
Alison (12/12/2005 8:49:32 PM): well it was sort of smoky which to me is an in between but then it made me think of snow drift
Alison: i've noticed i get something that'll remind me of something else sometimes - like w/karen's bobbypin in the last class we had - i thought of a flower shape which reminded me of a bobbypin i have w/a flower on it
Pat Chalfant: Well, does it bother you to meditate a little then even when I'm here and available if you type to me? That may have a bearing on what I will be able to do with people in this context, if so. Maybe if we just do this as an exercise. I'll write my question and hold it--do you think that would be less scary because it isn't called meditation?
Alison: i like meditating....but let me try again, i think i put pressure on myself too!
Alison: ok let me try
Alison: give me 10 minutes this time - it takes me a bit to get my mind out of the way!
Pat Chalfant: ok. I'm holding my question, anyway.
Alison: ok let's see what i come up with…
Alison: hmmm...all i'm getting is white notebook paper, the kind w/the blue lines...and then a silhouette standing in a lit doorway sort of hanging out waiting....i thought maybe it had to do w/writing but that might just be me putting in my 2 cents/interpretation
Alison: i guess the doorway is more like if you're in a dark room and they're lit from the hallway light behind them
Alison: but you can't see them, it's a silhouette
Pat Chalfant: Well, I've been sitting here meditating and seeing if I could get a guide's face for you which I could then draw in Paint, the way I drew one for Tricia... I thought of the writing that I need to do and was pondering how to go about it. So, bingo! you nailed another item in an exercise…
Alison: pat, do you think readings/psychic ability is something that you ever have complete confidence in? do you feel ever that as many times as you've gotten confirmation that sometimes you have a bit of self-doubt that might slip in or have you gotten past that?
Pat Chalfant: I just overheard on television an interview with a Suni contact with potential voters, maybe he registers people to vote also, and he was saying that he had talked to people who were sheiks and invited them to come out and vote, just vote for anyone, but vote! And they had said yes, they would. He then used a phrase that I think of as such an American phrase not to mention a metaphysical one that it made me laugh out loud--he said that it was a great "paradigm shift" in Iraq. Is that cool?
Alison: yes! for sure
Pat Chalfant: I don't think you ever fully get past it--but when I have it, and I just say what I get regardless of it, I almost always get confirmation so I am again affirmed and that's, I think, how it goes again and again, but the fear become less and less, comes less and less often.
Alison: i see...that's what i figured
Pat Chalfant: So it becomes on ongoing act of faith and a great spiritual conditioning process--a spiritual practice, if you will. Which is very inspiring, for me, at least.
Alison: yes i agree
Alison: spiritual practice is inspiring
Pat Chalfant: At least taking that kind of chance isn't life threatening, as some tests of faith can be.
Alison: true
Pat Chalfant: It's 9 and I'm for concluding this, now that we've accomplished quite a bit in the hour and 45 minutes we've done this and we can finish, if you want to. Great! Alison: yes i think so! especially since i'm sure they'll be able to relate to my doubts ! haha

Course OutlineFor these psychic development classes (the course outline is listed below) I'm using a brief textbook (less than 50 pages) by the famous British healer, Harry Edwards. It is the most common-sense one I have ever read, but very easy, I think, to understand. I truly believe you will love it, as I do...
It's a very inexpensive book.
You should know that we will always meditate during the last half of each class. We will be working on making a strong, useful, inspirational connection with spirit, and we will devote a large portion of class time to experiential exercises.
