Psychic Advice Column: "Not in Our Stars" (But in Ourselves) by Pat Chalfant (aka Ms. Stars...)
IS IT ALL IN YOUR MIND?
We've all had someone say it to us at least once in our lives: "It's all in your mind."
It's usually used to belittle our fears, or rob us of our intuitions.
The truth is that just about everything in the world is all in our minds. Plato told us that Socrates taught that the things of this world were simply shadows of reality. He used the image of shadows on a cave wall to convey the idea that we all create our own reality. He said it was as if we were chained facing the wall at the back of a cave, so that with light at our backs, we believed the shadows we saw moving on the wall were the real world, but that they were really only shadows.
The Christian Scientists, Religious Scientists, the members of Unity and the Church of Truth came along much more recently and spoke very forcefully about the same ideas. They were driving at the very same thing--that our material world is not the real world. They said the real world was the substance by way of which man makes his own reality, that this material was endlessly malleable and that the only means to molding it into the stuff of life was thought. It was all in our minds.
When we look at systems of thought such as Spiritualism that believe that entities on the other side of life can communicate with us and are assigned to help us in our daily lives, we see yet another way to mentally create our lives. They say that we must meditate to make contact with our guides and teachers. We can only do that through altered consciousness. This, too, is all in our minds.
We hear the same thing from the psychologists. We can straighten out our own hang-ups but only by facing the true inner self. We must learn the ways that we have gotten away from the core of ourselves--our real selves. The core isn't physical, it's mental. We must stop denying the essence of self. Again, it's all in our minds.
When we shop, usually either advertising or the opinions of our friends and family influence our choices; when we communicate with others, we often fall under a spell woven for us by that person. We sometimes suspend our natural skepticism when dealing with others and by projecting our own good qualities on them come a cropper because we allow them to take advantage of us. Sometimes we do just the opposite--we are too skeptical (project our own negative qualities)--and we push away something that might have been good for us. In each case, the outcome depends entirely upon what we have allowed ourselves to believe. It's all in our minds.
There are many who believe that hypnosis is something that is done to another that makes the other unable to protect himself. The truth is that we must give permission to others before they can lead us mentally in the paths of "unrighteousness (hypnotize us)." And the truth is that we can be "hypnotized" by many circumstances in life, not just by a person attempting to induce hypnosis.
We can be hypnotized by laughter, tears, television, fear, words of negative criticism, loathing, pain, love, and public opinion, just to name a few possibilities. All too often, we are under the influence of something other than our inner self's leadings and strengths. And that qualifies as hypnosis. The whole subject of conscious choice of mental and physical experiences in life is what ALL IN YOUR STARS! is about.
We are going to look at the aspects of consciousness and see if we can mold our lives and protect ourselves through our thought, and how we can just make our lives better by understanding how all this mind "stuff" works.
Hope you'll join me for this voyage of discovery...

ADVICE ON PSYCHIC DEVELOPMENT
Dear Ms. Stars:
I've been thinking about taking classes in psychic development.
Could you tell me where it would be safe to do that? I'm not really into crystals and tarot cards.
I don't want to become a psychic reader or anything. I just want to try to develop my ESP to help myself and my family and friends.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
Patricia Chalmers
---------------
Dear Patricia:
Interesting that you say, "I don't want to become a psychic reader or anything." That's exactly what I said when I started taking a Spiritualist development class. And in a short while, I was giving readings for them. But, many people in the Spiritualist class I still attend occasionally are there for exactly what you say you want--to learn to help and protect self, family and friends.
I always suggest a Spiritualist class when people ask me about development classes.
The Spiritualist organization began originally in America, then spread to England. It was greatly enhanced by the 19th century British research into psychic phenomena that involved some of the best minds in both America and England--people like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, George Bernard Shaw, Henry James, etc.
The U.S. Spiritualist Fellowship has been in existence for over a hundred years and they have been helping people develop their psychic abilities throughout all those years. Since I trust experienced teachers more than I do inexperienced ones, especially where my consciousness is concerned, I chose to be trained in their classes.
The Spiritualists are an organized religious group, but their classes in development are open to the public and class members are not obliged to attend their church services, nor do they speak in class about their church activities.
It's good that you already seem to sense that crystals and tarot cards are just frosting on the cake and that the real work is always done in consciousness. I also prefer to do consciousness work with those who work in an atmosphere of spirituality. That is definitely the case with the Spiritualists. (And, in spite of the organization's great age, they are modern enough to be listed on the Internet!)
May you grow in light and truth wherever and however you choose to develop.

INSIGHTS ON DEATH, DYING AND CHANNELING
Dear Ms. Stars:
What do you make of this new obsession with death and dying? There's a woman named Kubler-Ross who seems to have written about it a lot and I just think it's morbid. And these people who say that they "channel"--which seems to mean that dead people talk through them? I think it's ludicrous.
Jane Curtiz
----------
Dear Jane:
Studies show that the greatest fear most of us have is the fear of death. Almost exactly 25 years ago I interviewed a man who taught one of the earliest courses on Death and Dying at an L.A. College. I wrote about his (then) pioneering work in my column at that time.
His course was enormously popular with students. He developed the idea because he and his wife had suffered intensely when their young son died. He wanted to buffer people against the kind of paralyzing grief they had experienced.
His students were invited to try out a casket in his classroom (I saw the casket because it sat in his office where I interviewed him), a simple wooden box of the kind used by conservative Jews who prefer an old-fashioned kosher burial. He kept it in his office on campus and carried it to the classroom. His students not only lay down in the casket to get the feel of it, they wrote papers on the experience, and even wrote their own eulogies as part of the course work! They said their fear of death diminished greatly.
I experienced my own "training for death" when I was growing up. I was fortunate that my friend Betty Thoma had a father and mother who owned a furniture store/funeral home in Bluffton, Indiana where I grew up. I was often invited to go with Betty, her mother and sisters to their funeral home when the funeral parlor host needed a dinner break. Betty and her two sisters and I played among the caskets they sold, then paid our respects to the dead.
We imitated Betty's mother, viewing the deceased, signing our names, speaking in hushed tones to other visitors. It was a learning process, a small town thing. In small towns you know everyone and you pay your respects to them, living or dead. (I grant you that playing among the caskets may not always be part of that ritual!) We all really got into it and my fear of dead bodies disappeared then and there.
It is my understanding from what I've read of Kubler-Ross' work that she's doing something similar to my childhood funeral parlor experiences and the professor's work who taught Death and Dying. Only she's doing it for everybody in the world. I have great respect for her work.
Since she's a medical doctor, our physician-worshipping society pays attention to what she says, which has made the subject of death acceptable and not only death, but life after death, as well.
I may as well confess immediately that I've attended services for more than thirty years where the "dead" routinely bring messages to the living, (recently serving as a message bearer) and have had proof that this does indeed occur. If you have a Spiritist or a Spiritualist group in your town, you should visit and research it.
Your agitation suggests you may have deep fears yourself. Speaking of Kubler-Ross, she wrote four short essays called, "On Life After Death?" It's a quick way to find out if you really are as put off by both author and subject as you say--only 82 pages. If you read it, please let me know what you think. She relates her proof of life after death in these.
