BOOK EXCERPT:
One quiet morning at a public relations office in Los Angeles, California, about 35 years ago, as I sat at my office desk before business hours began, I chatted with an African-American receptionist who had recently started to work with me. I had had a lot of dental work done in my lifetime, so I empathized with her as she told me about the painful dental work she was undergoing. As she talked, I glanced down briefly at the work on my desk. When I looked up at her again, her face was literally that of a ghost. I saw a white substance in front of her which suddenly puffed out toward me. It began at the top of the girl's head and extended down the length of the part of her body visible above the desk separating us. The white stuff pushing forward toward me in front of her face had two coal-black holes for eyes - much like cartoon ghosts.
I blinked hard several times as I always do when I see surprising and/or alarming things. My immediate reaction was: Is she going to die?! I couldn't think of any other possible explanation at the time. Since it clearly looked ghostly, all I could think of was death. She had just told me that she felt like she might at any moment go to sleep at her keyboard because she was having multiple root canals and was literally living on codeine. I said that I understood and would try to work around it, but I really wondered how long her job would last if an executive found her sleeping over her typewriter. I really liked her and empathized with her health predicament, so I started searching for information about what this ghost-like vision might mean. I checked with some mediums I knew at that time. It seemed that no one knew what the ghostly white substance could be, but I kept looking for the answer.
Weeks Later
 Weeks later, I was browsing in my friend Jan Morosoff's bookstore, Books, Etc. (then, in Sherman Oaks, CA; long since closed). I spied a tiny new subject matter label, "Theosophy" over a section of books I had never noticed before. I picked up a book on the bottom shelf, which I vaguely noted had "Aura" in its title. I began to leaf through it and my eye somehow fell on a footnote that fairly shouted at me: "The Aura may balloon forward if an individual is taking large amounts of narcoptics. strong pain killers or sleeping medication." Since I have tried to find this footnote in theosophical books in recent years and have not found it, I can only give the gist of the statement here.There was my answer-the codeine! It instantly cleared up the whole matter. It also sent shivers down my spine. I felt as if there was a presence there with me. I remember it was very quiet in the shop and I felt exultant - I had been guided!
I'm not sure whether I told Jan about it at the time; I just remember I practically ran out of the shop, I was so thrilled.
Now I knew the girl wasn't going to die and, at the same time, I felt the hand of a guide on my shoulder, so to speak. It was like God's in his heaven and all's right with the world.
I had always pretty much "followed my nose" about what spiritual books I read, but never before with such mind-boggling success! I don't think any other discovery I made through the written word after that, in fact, was ever as dramatic as that one.
I believe now, of course, that I really was guided by my guide at that time, even though I didn't think in terms of guides then.
